I am so ecstatic to share a new "BeYOUtiful Blog" with you all! I have been looking forward to interviewing this amazing, accomplished, smart, and beautiful woman for the longest time and I am so happy to finally share this with you all. This weeks blog post is about Andreia Gibau Miss New York USA 2020. I have looked up to Andreia along with so many others through her reign as Miss New York USA. I hope you all enjoy learning a little more about her, all the work she has done, and how she found self confidence!
1.Tell us about your year as Miss New York USA and competing at Miss USA making it into the Top 10! What is something you learned from that amazing experience?
This year has been one for the history books! The Covid pandemic completely changed everyone’s life’s to some extent in every part of the world. To me instead of seeing it as a challenge, I saw it as an honor. The honor that I had the ability to use who I am, what I can do, and my ability to empathize with people to provide a sense of hope and unity. So, navigating my entire Miss NY USA reign so far, that’s what’s been in the back of my mind. I want to be remembered as the Miss NY USA who uplifted her community & gave people a sense of hope at one of the lowest times in our country. Competing for Miss USA was a dream come true, of course I didn’t win. But I believe I gained so much more. I learned the true power I have inside me to do whatever it is I want in life. And also what can happen when you go through life with a bigger purpose than what’s tangible and right in front of you.
2.What is something you hope others have learned from you and will continue to learn from you as you finish your year as Miss New York USA.
For me to go from my humble upbringing and be where I am today, I’m truly in awe and just so grateful. My hope is that people will be inspired by my journey thus far, and know that they, too, have all the power inside of them to achieve their dreams and that who you are is always more than enough. I’m seriously no different than you. Also I want people to learn that there’s always a bigger purpose to our lives and I believe it’s to make an impact & inspire the next generation of people that could follow in your footsteps and so it’s really important that no matter what you do in life that you use your platform, skills, and passion to uplift others.
3. How did you find so much confidence in yourself and what would you tell others girls who are struggling to find that confidence
Finding confidence didn’t happen overnight. It was a journey. And the best way to work towards having stable confidence,(and I say stable because it’s something that you always have to work on) is to challenge yourself. Look at what you want to improve about yourself and set a goal, try to new things and give yourself new experiences. For me I knew I would be more confident if I was able to be proud of the things I accomplished so I focused on being the first in my family to graduate, I took any opportunity I had to travel and learn about different cultures, and I challenged myself to be better at public speaking something that I never felt confident doing because English wasn’t my first language. Those will all contribute to your growth as a person and turn into better self esteem. Also start seeing your own self-worth by being more positive. Work on your negative habits to minimize them, and then concentrate on all the positive aspects of you and your life.
4.If you could tell your younger self one thing what would it be?
I didn't exactly strive to be popular, but I definitely cared way too much about what people thought of me. I tried so hard to fit In & so I would tell younger me, do not waste your time on being friends with people who you have to change who you are to be accepted by them. It’s not worth it at all & those people are not going to matter in the future. There are groups of friends around who will accept you and who you’ll have so much more in common with if you just look around.
